'69 F-250 Issues

I've got a 1969 F250 360ci, C6 automatic trans.

So when I got the truck it ran like crap. I figured out the guy I bought it from had plug wires swapped. He had 6 and 8 backwards. Fixed that, ran great. Then I decided to check timing. I advanced it from tdc to 12 btdc. Truck ran better for a few days, then it started bucking while driving really bad. I replaced the old fuel filter. Didn't fix it. Put on a new pump. Didn't fix it. Retarded timing back to 8 bdtc, but now it is popping in the tail pipe upon deceleration, and bogging down upon accelerating from a stop. Does anyone have any idea. I've tried resetting it back to tdc and that didn't help any either. This is my daily driver, so figuring it out in a timely manner would definitely help a ton. Haha.

Running bad

Be sure that the carburetor is clean. Check the back lash on the timing chain, also remove the #1 plug, turn the engine by hand to see if the timing pointer lines up with “0” on the harmonic balancer when the piston is tdc. Then let us know.

Back fire through the tail pipe - check for exhaust leaks at the heads and exhaust log doughnut....if applicable....and recheck timing.

Draggin' axe upon accelerating: Check the breaker plate for fluid movement....check the wires there, too. Point gap good? Check the vacuum advance can's connection/movement to the breaker plate whilst applying suction to the can's nipple.

And welcome to FTE.

I've checked tdc manually, and it actually did line up! Surprise, surprise!

I'll check out the other things mentioned.

What exactly is the breaker plate?

Breaker aka point plate. Thru 1971, there were 2 individual (upper & lower) plates.

1972: FoMoCo changed to a one piece design, there are two plates held together with plastic bushings.

The bushings crack apart, the plate wiggles around.

The plate moves, but it's stiff. All the wires look fine, except one that runs from the distributor to a can looking thing.

That's not the cause that's the effect. When it back fired it blew the mufflers out.

It has stopped backfiring and all. Seems to have gone back to normal. I mean, the issue seems to be clogged exhaust. Now to readjust carbs and set them to were I had them. That seemed like the sweet spot.
