F350 Engine Swap
Any opinions on swapping a 460 engine into an ‘88 F350 that has the 351W engine in it? The donor truck is a ‘90 F350. Both have EFI, air (compressor is on driver’s side of engine), and 5spd overdrive. I know the 460 trans is the heavy duty version, so I plan on swapping it over too. One concern right off the bat is that the 351 engine has 5 electrical connectors coming out of the firewall, but the 460 has 11 (some are not connected, but most are). What’s up with that?

This is a powertrain swap anyway as these engines have different trans bolt patterns. The only connector under the hood you need to be concerned with is the one at the PCM connector, the others aren't engine related. When doing these swaps you always want to keep the EFI harness completely intact as there were always wiring changes from year to year.

Paraphrasing: In other words, don't use any of the wiring from the donor truck.
Consider that this truck will have little or no resale value. I like a 460 for almost any use but for a swap I would prefer a diesel. My opinion, I would place more resale value on a diesel swap also.

Ok, good to know on the wiring. I wasn't clear that that was the intent of Conanski's post. On the diesel, I also would prefer that for a swap. As a matter of fact, I have a very nice E350 7.3 IDI to use as a donor, but I've been told that it would not be a good fit for the F350 because of the van's different chassis design. Any thoughts on that?
