I have been trying to isolate a noise in my 90 BII. This noise happens in 2WD I haven't tried it in 4WD. It is a noise like (sqrungz) that happens upon acceleration and when turning to the left sometimes. This doesn't happen just upon acceleration, just at certain load times ( like when giving a little more gas for a hill). I also noticed that when the truck dips the noise will occur. I took it to the local garage and have replaced all that they recommended. I have replaced all U-joints in the front axles. I have replaced the rotor-hub asemblies and repacked the wheel bearings. I have removed all loose shields, checked all body mounts, bolts, rivets, and even switched the manual locking hubs from side to side to see if the noise would change. I thought the inside of the cat convertors may have come loose but they had not. I suspected the rear drive shaft but I removed it and it seemed nice and smooth, no binding. It is frustrating to say the least. Any ideas?
I have looked the suspension over but I can not locate any visual faults. I have tried bouncing the truck but can not duplicate the sound. It seems I have to have just a slight bit of load on the truck before I hear the sound. This is why I suspected a universal or another part of the drivetrain. I weaved back and forth going down the road to load the wheel bearing but this doesn't produce any sounds at all. I have pulled a load on the truck with the emegency brake on and still can't hear a sound. I just replaced both heads with HD heads at the tune of $608.00 so you can see why this is frustrating. The noise seems to originate from the front of the truck around the wheel area (I believe the on the right side). People have told me they have heard the noise as I procede up the road. Thanks for the sugestion I will take another closer look at the suspension.
The weird noise problem is solved. The noise originated from my CV type rear drive-shaft. I would say that the rear cv-joint was bad. The drive-shaft did not cause any vibrations at all but it projected a noise that sounded like it came from the fornt-end of the vehicle. I purchased a rebuilt one for $129.00 and the problem is solved. I Hope this helps with any similiar problem.
