Frozen hatch strut!

It's cold everywhere, and 20's-30's here in NC. The other day, I was at a job site, and going back and forth to the van for tools. Everything was ok, but then, I went to close the hatch, and felt resistance. It closed, but there was a crunch that I knew was bad news. I Opened it back up, and the left strut had sheared the bolt off, and broke through the trim panel! I took it off, and couldn't compress it at all. Usually, this cold weather is when they fail! But maybe it froze somehow.

Bummer on the trim panel.. The Ford part number for the the strut is F39Z11406A10A.
There is a ton of them on ebay. And much cheaper aftermarket ones also.
