Frozen hatch strut!
It's cold everywhere, and 20's-30's here in NC. The other day, I was at a job site, and going back and forth to the van for tools. Everything was ok, but then, I went to close the hatch, and felt resistance. It closed, but there was a crunch that I knew was bad news. I Opened it back up, and the left strut had sheared the bolt off, and broke through the trim panel! 
I took it off, and couldn't compress it at all. Usually, this cold weather is when they fail! But maybe it froze somehow.
