360 or 302

I've got a 1969 2wd Ranger w/ 360 4spd. The FE needs rebuilt. The truck is my daily driver and was wondering if I would see that big of a difference in fuel economy if I replaced the 360 with a 302. I've heard the 302 doesnt get that great of mileage either. Just thought I would check and see if anybody has any input. Thanks.

I would stick withthe 360 until a rebuild then rebuild it to a 390. If you switch to a 302 your still pulling around the same heavy truck with a smaller engine. I had a 302 in my 95 f150,I know they are a little different setups but it was a dog even with a tune up. I'd choose my 69 CS with a 390 over it any day and I think I was actually getting better gas mi in the 69. My newest truck a 70 crewcab 4x4 I have put in a 460 but have yet to get it on the road so I can't rightfully talk you into scraping everything for a gas guzzeling 460. LOL just my 2 cents.

Thanks 460 crew for the input. I'll probably keep the FE in the truck. Ive got a spare FE in the garage that Ill make into a 390.
This is my first FE rebuild, so it ought to be a learning experience.
Thanks again for the input.

I agree, these old trucks tend to get the same mileage based on their weight. A gear change or weight change is the best way to see a real difference. Since your drive train is already set up for an FE, I'd stick with it. Get he 360 running good, with a hot ignition and good exhaust, then keep your foot out of it :-)
