Hey guys, I been reading here for a while, but didn't have a need to post until now. I have 17 F250 CCSB with the 6.7 and I've really been enjoying it the last few months. But in this cold the last couple weeks I think I've developed a problem with the engine brake malfunctioning. I like to use it most of the time so usually sometime after I start driving I'll reach over and push the button. For the first time last week when I pushed the button I saw some yellow flashes on the dash display that I couldn't read and the engine brake function light did not come on. The engine brake itself would not function either. Repeatedly pushing the button would not do anything either. About ten minutes later I pulled up to my mailbox and could smell the DPF burning off. I thought maybe the brake doesn't work when the DPF is burning off? Later over the weekend everything worked fine. Then again today it failed to work and I saw the screen when it happened. It acted like a glitch- like the normal yellow box that tells you the brake is activated flashed quickly a couple times then nothing... Any ideas before I take it to the dealer? Im in Ohio, so its been in the single digits/teens but not crazy cold like some of these truck see, So I'm not sure if the cold is even a factor.
Had a very similar situation to yours. After 14 months. 30000k/19000m it happened only once.
I use the function and press the button multiple times a day. That day nothing came on in the dash and it’s wasnt working. Made sure it wasn’t just a burnt led/light. I pulled over shut everything down, restarted... still nothing. Went on with my work day. 10hrs later on my way back home everything was functioning as it should ! Mentioned it to service to put it down in my history. Conclusion was a guess of change in weather / high moisture affecting contacts at the switch. Been good ever since. Sure others in cold/moist climate will chime in
Thanks Ninja, it sounds like the same issue. Today I let the transmission get up to 100 degrees before activating the brake and it worked fine. Perhaps it needs a warm-up period?
^^^ Haven't had an issue with mine since new (took delivery in Oct) and we've seen sub-zero temps for some time now. I use mine often. I'll try it when I head out for lunch, temp is hovering around 0 right now.
Yes, both times today I got it to work right away while everything is cold. So I guess I could rule out temperature. What about during dpf regens then, would that be a reason why you wouldn't want to allow the brake to work?
This happened to mine yesterday. 12 degrees out, pushed the button heard the chime, engine break light blinked a few times and went out. Pushed it again and nothing? Today we have (feels like temp) -3 degrees. Wife and I leaving for New Orleans this Monday. Hopefully it will be at least at freezing temps when we get back!! That will be a nice warm up for us!! If the engine break is still doing that I will call dealer. Truck only has 5,440 miles on it. Has been awesome since I got it in June!

Been in the single digits here in NJ. I noticed for the first time, when I push the engine brake button, the icon on the display flashes a few times then stays off. This morning (7 degrees F) the engine brake worked properly, I did have the block heater plugged in, not sure if it made any difference?
Mine did exactly as you described on Thursday, worked fine in the morning when leaving our 40 degree garage, sat out in the 10 degree weather at work all day, then when coming home it flashed a few times and failed to work. I stopped and shut off/restarted and it still wouldn't work. Pulled it into the garage and the next morning it functioned fine after thawing out in the garage.
I highly doubt it's a temperature thing. Reason I say this is my truck has 21,200 km on it since Dec 17th 2016. I put my engine brake on in outside temps ranging from -45 C to plus 42 C, after cold soak, warmed up, in between engine temps, I put on my engine brake, every start either on auto or full depending on driving conditions. I have never had an issue with an error message or not being available.
Document it, have your dealer document the issue and try to replicate it, so that it's on your oasis report while you do have warrenty. Make sure you get the paperwork for the cpvisit, what the complaint was, what they invetigated and did. This will ensure if it comes back it's covered and they can do the work to investigate.. It's a brand new truck and somethings not right.
That's what I would do. Advice is worth what you pay for it, good luck.
