What oil are you using now with the Ford approved list

Well, I doubt Ford gives a flying , umm, fudge, about 7.3L problems/issues at this point. They are all long since out of warranty. So, just because they don't report 7.3L problems with the new oils doesn't mean there aren't any. In fact, I would suspect that the older motors are more vulnerable to excessive wear from newer oils, as the newer oils have less and less anti-wear additives, in order to protect the DPF/cats on newer diesels.
Umm, that doesn't seem right.
A.) I don't recall ever seeing a Castrol DIESEL RATED oil at Walmart.
B.) I have never seen any DIESEL RATED oil sell for $5/gallon.
C.) $1.25 /qt is a plausible sale price for regular NOT DIESEL RATED, conventional automotive 15w40 Castrol.
See the theme/pattern here? I highly doubt that Castrol oil is for diesels, in which case you definitely should not put it in your 7.3L

Plus the price had me suspicious. Was it a clearance thing or something, or can you buy it at that price all the time ($5 gallon)? At that price, its almost cheap enough to put it in the fuel tank!

There was a discussion about this last summer:

Castrol RX Super
Castrol Oils are very commonly used here Down Under (Australia).
If you go to the Castrol website and punch in our 7.3 donk, it will give you their recommended engine oil.
Even though you rightfully note that the Castrol GTX is indeed for diesel engines, I feel it is not for the 7.3L donks. It is more for the later modern common rail engines.
The recommended Castrol Oil is Castrol RX Super 15W 40. Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil (it is not a synthetic). There is a standard Castrol RX Diesel, but the recommended is RX Super.
I have used nothing other than RX Super in my 2005 7.3 (your 2003).
Castrol also have a recommended 4R100 fluid in their Transmax Z Fully Synthetic and again I've used nothing else.
Cheers ,
Reg

G’day Reg, It’s great to see other Aussie 7.3 superduty enthusiasts on here. I have used the Castrol RX super in my 7.3 from new. It seems to run nice in all weather. I do find the engine uses about 1 ltr in the first couple thousand kms then after topping up it stays steady until the next change. I always run the engine for 5 minutes then switch it off and recheck the level so it’s not that. It’s always done it. Not sure why. Has anyone else noticed this by any chance.

I would say so. The price is right and the availability is plentiful. My truck never ran good on Rotella. I change my oil at 4000 miles and I have no desire to push it further.Yep, I drank the coolaid and went back for seconds.

My truck seems to be happiest on Mobil Delvac dino. I've tried others over the years (some sales are too good to pass up) but I've always come back to the Delvac. The best switch for me if I want to joint the CK-4 conspiracy is Rotella T5 but, just like Jesser02EX, my truck just never seemed to take a liking to Rotella. No hard data, just a SOTP feel. Once my CJ-4 stockpile is depleted (next oil change) I will have to see how thirsty I am when I'm looking at the glass of Kool-Aid. I think it will depend on cost and availability. If I can find an "approved" oil on the list just as easy and cheap I'll give it a try otherwise I might just roll the dice on my Delvac.
