The third brake light on my 96 explorer isn't working. I have power to the black box. Does anyone know how to test the light and the black box? Should the light have continuity? What kind of voltage should the black box put out? Thansk for the help.
I had the same problem and couldn't find anyone who knew how to test. The Ford repair manual says to test by using a new balllast and light. Usually the ballast (black box) goes before the neon light. It also easier to replace and is cheaper. I think the ballast is around $85 from the dealer.
I went throug this delima took the dealer a month to figure it out (with my help)
firts get you a automotive test light one end has a aligator clip and the other has a sharp point....
2) get you a helper
3) find the wire to the ballast unplug it ground the test light have your helper step on the brakes stick the tester in the end of the wires coming from the brake switch( the dealer was testing the ballst umm no wonder it wouldnt light up) if the light glow you got power
4) plug the ballast back up
5) unplug light from ballast
6) repat #3 except check the wire from the ballast to the brake light if it does not light up the replace BALLASt but if it does light up then your light is bad
if light is bad you better hope your handy with a pop rivit gun
on ,my 97 you have to take the whole back lift inside panel off drill the 4 pop rivits out to take the trim off around the 3rd brake light just to get it out!
I drilled out the rivets and replaced them with small stainless steel screws. Much easier and if I ever have to take out the light again it will only take a few minutes.
