My escape has a Mach sound system, but the head unit was replaced so it only runs the 6 speakers (tweeters and 4 speakers, no sub). The sound is great in the front seats, but in the back, not much bass at all. I was wondering what I can do to get some low end in. Should I replace the HU, get new speakers for the back, put in a sub, or do a total speaker change?

I'd go with subs, they're are pretty easy to install, it really depends how much base you really want.

I'm kind of an audiophile, so I want nice, full bass, but not too much thump. I was thinking about taking out the 4 woofers, replacing them with Alpine SPS-570s, and putting in a powered sub, like an Infinity Basslink X. Dont wanna sound like a bonehead, but is this a good idea?

Thats not a bad choice but if you have the stock comps up front they are not that bad of a speaker. Either way you go if you want better sound you will have to amp the front speakers. The basslink sound good but it will be hard to find a location for it.
