Engine ID

I just bought a 69 F-100. The last owner says the motor is a 390....I just wanted to verify this. Is there any way to be certain that it is a 390??

easiest way is to try to measure the stroke with a dowel.

Try a couple of searches using "dowel", "stroke", "displacement"

I got the same thing there CC. I am going to get the engine id from the block. I am also going to be tearing it down in a couple of weeks so I'll really know.

The engine ID really will not get too far in your search. The differnt blocks were truly the CJ versions, and the mirror 105, a little more on the beef side for build ups. The way to determine what displacement you are working with starts at identifying the stroke, this will give you roughly what crank is inside. Then, if you are still curious and can pull it off (or the head), measure the bore hole. These two are where the displacement calcs come into play. The 360/390/410 have the same bore, so ID the stroke and go from there....
