Has anyone tried this? I have access to a 92-ish F150 with a 300FI and 5 speed gearbox. I was curious how hard the wiring swap would be. The guy I bought the truck (63) from dropped in a 250 chevy engine; it just doesn't compare to the 300 in the F150.
I'm also open for other swap ideas (It's got to be able to pull my car and trailer).
It would depend on how comfortable you are with doing it. It would be fairly straight forward, mark the wires as to where they come from before unhooking them, change out the mounts for the engine and trans. Swap in the motor and trans, get a Ford drive shaft and have it rebuilt to the proper length. A fuelie 6 with the right gears can pull a car and trailer. But if you are doing alot of pulling I personally would opt for a good 390 with a trans you like, 4 speed, C6, AOD. Easier from the wiring point to convert over and since you will need to take out the Chevy mounts and cross members anyway, a good V8 may be what you need.
In the end only you can decide as to how much work you can handle and how much power you want to run.
My biggest concern was the pin-out of the ECU in regards with the peripherals (gauges) and switches. I swapped a JDM engine into my Supra with the aid of a pin-out (schematic), and everything went smoothly.
But of course this was a FI swap to FI swap. I may need to stick to something simple, like a small block 4BBL setup. Just wanted to see if anyone's tried the FI swap.
