I have a fresh 390 built pretty stout. I changed the heads to the old C4AE and put in the cj valve train. I have Hooker headers and one 3 inch exhaust pipe. Would I gain anything by adding a 2nd pipe or would that open it up too much? Thanks for the help!
What kind of power is it making? A single mandrel bent 3" should flow well enough for ~360 rwhp. I had a 390GT in a 76 F250, and the previous owner had dual 3"s. It might have been a little too much (not 100% sure), but I liked it. What are you running for an intermediate pipe (H, Y, X, etc). Also, what size tubing are you running for that?

I guess its all personal preference then. What year is your truck? Also, do you have emmissions or visual checks in your state? That should help you determine what you can run. Some states (like MA...) are real PITA about little things.
i have a single 3" mandrel bent pipe going out back with headers and a 2 1/2 Y pipes on my 400. works great. sounds awesome. i highly recomend a magniflow muffler with it, maximizes flow with its straight through design, working great for me
