Help With Cold Weather Additives
Question for you cold weather dwellers, what should I add in addition for zero temps? I read that Power Service is only good into the 30's.
It is available almost everywhere.
Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost | Power Service
AR6200 Fuel Modification Complex ? Archoil | Archoil
It is available almost everywhere.
Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost | Power Service
It is available just about everywhere, including Walmart
In both cases, I blend it with the Stanadyne Lubricity formula. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...iAAEgKAiPD_BwE
I have had a hard time finding it since Advance AutoParts stopped carrying. I ended up buying a case of it on Amaazon or Ebay.
I take one 80oz bottle of the PowerService, and I split the bottle in half. I use empties from prior use, but obviously the first time you do it, you won't have a second empty bottle. So, I have 40oz of the Power Service, to which I 1 whole bottle (16oz) of the Stanadyne Lubricity. Shake it up good to mix. I now pour that mix back into the empty 16oz Stanadyne bottle. I fill it up. That bottle goes with me to the gas station, and I add the whole thing just before filling up the tank. So, 16oz of the Power Service/Stanadyne mix to approx 30+ gallons of fuel
I usually run my tank nearly empty, and then fill up. I try not to do $10 here, $20 there kind of stuff. A.) Its more time wasted stopping for fuel, and B.) Its harder to calculate how much additive to use, C.) Its also harder to monitor fuel mileage with partial fills.
Also, I agree with some other posts. At zero degree temps, it would really be a good idea to plug in the block heater overnight. Yes, the truck should start without it. But, it will likely make the neighbors unhappy, with the not just the noise, but also the large cloud of stinky white smoke that will be produced until the truck warms up.
Speaking of faster warmup, I would get or make a grill block off. Since this is apparently a temporary visit, you could just make one out of cardboard. I did that when I first got my truck. I used a large piece of cardboard, trimmed to shape of the grill, and covered in 2 layers of clear packing tape, then zip tied it to the grill. It lasted all winter. Only started to fall apart in the warm wet spring. I have since purchased a true grill block/blanket.
Fia Grille Covers, Go Fia Winter Grill Cover, Truck Grille Covers, Grille Bug Screen
Its $90 here. I think I paid less then that when I bought mine off ebay.
I put it on when the temp get into the 40s. I leave the 2 flaps open until about freezing, then they get closed. It makes a big difference in warmup time, and it helps the truck to stay warm going down the highway and especially if you are sitting idle in traffic. And no, the truck has never overheated with it on. These trucks have massively oversized cooling systems, especially when running empty or lightly loaded.

I use the performance formula which does not have the lubricity additive (see chart). I also remember a study a few years back where Stanadyne Performance came in very poor on the lubricity test. Many people are familiar with that test, it is what brought Optilube fame and fortune.
