Rain/headlight sensor issues

I resently tinted my windows on my new 2017 F350 platinum, including the eyebrow on front windshield. Has anyone experienced issues with auto headlights or auto wipers? The mirror sensor is not covered directly in front, however it appears the auto operation is not consistent. Any ideas?

interesting, i have an appointment later this week to get windows and an eyebrow done as well.. Would hate for the eyebrow to cause them not to function correctly. Maybe someone will chime in that has experience with this.

Have the same problem. I tinted the windshield 80%. Sensor is just too sensitive.

The rain sensor is mounted highest on the windshield and would definitely be affected by a tint. It is an infrared sensor. Auto high beams and Lane Keep Assist is a camera and mounted a bit lower. Once again, a tint would affect function.

Auto headlight on/off and the climate control solar load sensor is mounted on the top of the dash behind the center speaker right at the windshield.

Here's a pic of mine, hope it helps.

It shouldn't be affected unless you tint the outside of the windshield or run it behind the interior fairing that covers the cameras.

I had 5% tint on eyebrow. I’m looking at changing to 15%. The auto on headlights seam to be affect.

My wipers are really inconsistant at the best of times and I haven't done anything to the tint. In the on position they will go steady when there uis very little moisture on the glass, to te point I have to turn them off. When I want them to work they don't so I need to turn them off then back on again. Randomly they go crazy slashing away at rain that doesn't exist. Honestly I wish I didn't have this feature.

You can actually turn off the "rain sensing" feature in the driver assistance menus...at which point the wipers go back to being operated normally.

I agree, the rain sensing is not that accurate. I think Ford needs to put a second rain sensor lower on the windshield and biased towards the driver in order to make this feature more accurate. But in fairness, I don't think any automaker is doing this, and all the vehicles I've had with the rain-sensing feature don't perform any better. Heck, our old 2002 Mercedes E320 had rain-sensing, and it did not do any better or worse than my 2017 Super Duty did. You'd think in 15 years, the technology could be improved.

I agree. Considering all the advertised Technology and cost to consumer. It would function with a higher degree of accuracy. Based on my experience with it and what I’ve read, is safe to say it’s a disappointment. I thought my problem was eyebrow tinting, but that was not the case. Sometimes it work as expected and other times it’s plain guffy. Hopefully they will have update or something down the road. Like many have said, I could simply turn it off.

Thank you for that, you know I remember passing that on the settings screen but I forgot all about it. I will turn it off as I think I would just power through wiper blades and it can't be doing the windshield any good when it is running dry or randomly at full speed with barely a drop of ran.

Your are right you would think it is something they could figure out as it has really turned out to be one of those why bother features. I have to say though, we had an SUV, a newer body style Mercedes ML that it did work on. In fact that is why I was kind of excited it came on this truck but sadly on this one it is more of comedy skit. Glad there is an option to disable it though.

Auto headlamps and auto wipers on this truck both suck. My headlamps come on when a cloud moves in front of the sun. Horrible design, so bad I use the lights manually. Wipers never come on soon enough, unless you turn the sensitivity way up, then they don’t turn off.

Well ... they said the rain sensitive wipers are about as good as they will ever be. They didn't see anything odd in them going full speed when there is barely a drop of rain or having to turn the switch off and on to get them going when it was raining. So ... I shut my off what dumb feature.

I always leave my rain sensing on the first step because they saved my bacon last winter in a snow storm, I got splashed with a wave of slush of a big truck oncoming and it cleaned my windshield off in 3 super fast wipes. This was when the truck was very new and really did save my bacon. I put up with the occasional extra wipe now because of this, better safe than sorry. I do agree another sensor biased to the driver would be a good thing too.

Mine are the same way don’t work when needed or on when they done need be. Just got my truck back from the dealer today and said it was up to date software in the bcm and they couldn’t do anything to fix it.
