5.4 2v no start

I have a 2001 f250 with the 5.4 2v I drove the truck this morning and had no issues. but tonight I needed to run a few errands but the truck did not start. the truck will turn over but will not fire. i am pretty sure i am getting fuel as i can smell it from the exhaust. i have tried the fuel reset button on the pass. side kick panel. i have checked all of the fuses under the dash
and under the hood.
i am at a loss i replaced the battery but still no start. any ideas? as of now no check engine light.

What is the PATS light doing while cranking?
Check the fuel pressure at the test port on the fuel rail.
If fuel pressure is good, check for 12v at the coils and injectors, any one of each will do - a fuse may be blown that supplies power.
The crankshaft sensor input to the PCM is needed to run the engine.

im not sure my 2001 has the pats system. i have a standard metal key with no transponder. i have checked all the fuses from the cab to under the hood all good.
next i do need to check to see if i am even getting fuel to the rails and i need to check for spark while cranking.
everything i seem to be finding ranges from bad temp senders to the pcm. i guess my next steps from what i have been seeing is checking to make sure the relays are good for the pcm. then check the crank sensor, coolant temp sensor, fuel pump.
what are everyones thoughts?

take the air inlet hose plumbing apart just after the air filter & give it a quick spray of starting fluid and try to restart. IF... it acts like it wants to start or runs briefly and dies ( like 2-4 sec), then you have a fuel delivery problem. IF... there is no change then odds are there is ignition problem.

yes, as mentioned from R&B Babich check the crankshaft position sensor and connector. If it isn't getting the signal from it, it won't know when to deliver spark. Clean the MAF sensor and check your air filter. If you have a K&N air filter sometime the oil from that can foul up the MAF.

update so Sunday morning I went out to further diagnose my problems. I checked for spark which I was getting so I attempted to start the truck and it hit a lick and I gave it some throttle and the truck started running.
no check engine light, no miss fire. the truck was running as if nothing was wrong. I went and took my old battery for the core charge to the parts store and did not have any problems. my next thought process was maybe I had some trash clog the fuel filter and after it sat it settled down in the filter and was able to fire up.
I drove the truck to work yesterday and home and then this morning for an errand without issue.
I replaced the fuel filter several months ago. could trash from my tank have clogged my fuel filter? I got fuel on Saturday morning, could I have gotten bad gas? I think I am going to replace my fuel filter again they are cheap and easy to replace so to me why not. or could this be a sign of a bad fuel pump or pump relay?

DID it started with a little throttle applied?? or all the way floored?

A little or partial throttle implies that maybe the IAC valve was stuck?? You can remove and clean it. It is a bit more work, but, If you remove the whole throttle body housing from the intake. the IAC will come off with it and make it easier to remove & clean , or replace. With the throttle body off give opportunity to clean the back side of the throttle plate and interior of housing, which, also contains 2 EGR ports that can crust over with carbon deposits.

If it took full throttle to get it restarted then that hints towards that it was flooded and maybe you have a leaking injector or fuel pressure regulator.

It can not hurt to change your fuel filter again. Maybe also clean your MAF sensor

Well as a update I replaced my idle air control valve and no change. I took a hammer to the bottom of the fuel tank with the key on and watched my fuel gauge go from quarter of a tank to half a tank and the truck fired right up. So I guess I will be dropping my fuel tank and replacing my fuel pump. I replaced my iacv because of a couple of reasons one I was having some problems with my idle surging and after testing it and was having problems opening and it was 17 yrs old. No harm in replacing something that was from the factory in 2001.
