Smile My 1961 F100 Stepside Project

My first post ! I recently inherited my Grandfather's 61 F100 farm truck,
which never left southhampton county va.
I had a flatbed tow it down to NC right after Thanksgiving. Tires were dry rotted and
we didn't even attempt to start the truck, given how long it had been sitting.
Been sitting up for 15 -20 yrs. Motor is an inline 6 with column shift.
I Had to do some work to it to bring it back to life,
& Concentrated on mechanical and safety items.
It now drives / runs well considering it's age !
Front cab end of the truck is pretty decent, with a few dents etc, the stepside bed
is in rough shape, wrapped up with rust through. I'm thinking i need to find f100 parts
truck and buy the bed off it and swap? Opinions?

Stuff I've repaired / replaced so far:
- New battery (and cables)
- new volt reg.
- new generator
- fan belt
- new tires went with nexan roadian M/T 's
- All new brake lines from front to rear, shoes, wheel cylinders, pads etc
- cleaned and flushed master cylinder,
- New front wheel bearings / alignment
- New fuel filters, cleaned fuel bowl. (Tank was fine)
- adjusted clutch
- oil change / trans oil flush / changed
- rebuilt carburetor / adjusted choke
- plugs, wires, point set
- condensor
- new tail lights / headlights and fixed wiring issues (need new turn signal switch)
- brake light switch
-Head valve cover gasket

-vacuum advance valve
- fuel pump

My exhaust manifold (inline 6) is cracked and I am searching for a replacement (Any help with this is appreciated)
I am also looking for a replacement step side bed and looking for a turn signal switch

Thanks everyone, I am looking forward to sharing my progress
as more develops. I appreciate anyone's help with direction on where to find parts.
I've looked at dennis carpenter and Mac's online with no exhaust parts avail.

Nice looking truck and you can't beat having a truck with family history.
From the picture the bed doesn't look that bad. The steel floor was added, original would be a wood floor that likely rotted away many years ago. I'd consider rebuilding the bed you have.

Welcome to FTE.
I see you are from NC you may way to look in to joining the NC chapter https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...c-chapter.html
lot of nice people and they have get together's. ALso if you need a hand with something you can give a shout out and see who is close by that can give a hand.

On the floor as said it was wood.
I have an 81 flare side that's what Ford called this bed, that the wood was gone along with the cross members. I felt it would take too much money to fix back with wood and had a long bed style side, Fords flat side truck bed, that I am using the floor from to bolt the side panels to.

Down the road if I want I can go with wood as the sides just bolt to the floor be it wood or metal.

If your cross members are good and just the wood & metal strips are needed I would think you could find that.
Don't know what LMC Truck may have for you year?
I know there are others that have wood and sure others will be by to let you know who they are.

There is wood under the metal flooring, but it is pretty much rotted out in the front area
of the truck, looked like it was 3/4" plywood possibly ?

Nice looking truck!
I feel your exhaust frustration (I have a 63 w/223). You will most likely have to find a parts engine for a new manifold. I lived in Conway SC for a couple years. 223’s would pop up occasionally on Craigslist, FB marketplace, letgo etc; so keep an eye out. They can typically be had for pretty cheap.

I am also looking for a replacement Flareside bed (stepside is a Chevrolet ) and looking for a turn signal switch.
223 I-6 exhaust manifold is the same: 1954/64 Ford full sized Passenger Cars & F100/600.

This manifold is very hard to find. No one has any NOS (New Old Stock), it's not reproduced, so a used manifold without cracks is your only choice.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mar-K (mar-k.com located in OKC) reproduces Flareside beds and all the parts, including the bed wood (pine was original).

If the wood is rotted, Flareside wood bed kits in either oak or pine are available from all the repro parts sellers.

The closest repro parts sellers to you (NC): Carolina Classics in Durham, Dennis Carpenter in Concord, National Parts Depot in Charlotte.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T/S switch is a two piece set up. Notice in the pic (see below) that the 1961/62 cancelling cam (13304) is separate from the switch (13341).

The cam has two small springs that tend to snap, you'll have to look at yours to see if it's OK .. If it is, the switch is bad.

Turn signal switch and cancelling cam are the same: 1960/61 Falcon/Comet & 1961/62 F100/250 2WD

They're both obsolete, but are available NOS

Ok, I am In Need of a Fuel Pump Now. After putting a few miles on it today i noticed
the top of the fuel pump was leaking and gas was blowing all over the firewall after driving.

I just replaced the valve head gasket yesterday as that was dryrotted and oil was leaking.
I cleaned up the motor, and we seem to be moving on to the next leak !!

Does anyone have any tips or part numbers they can share?

1961 3.6L 223 I6

Thanks

It's to far gone. I'm in NC also so I'll tow it out of your way for free.

I think I got my new turn signals switch cam and all from Dearborn classics.

That is a really nice looking truck. If it were me, I would try to keep it just like Granpa had it. In the bed, just throw a piece of raw diamond plate in there and let it get some surface rust to match. I would consider having it clear coated to preserve the years of patina on that old girl. VERY cool. As you have learned on this forum, Ford called these a flareside. To be honest though, outside of this forum, everyone else will call it a stepside so don't feel bad.

I'm having a little bit of sputtering and hesitation here and there, While driving. The motor is Idling fine and the
Choke seems adjusted fine too.
Does anyone have any youtube links on carburetor adjustments or tips? I think its running rich or something is off.

keep in mind, My exhaust header is cracked, and my muffler is non existant beyond below the drivers seat area (this may play a part??)

Look at the pic in post #7, there is no cam. 1961/62 F100/250 2WD: The T/S cancelling plate (13304) is separate from the switch (13341).

Your exhaust issues are not helping however, as taught in high school shop class and mentioned on FTE several times, 90% of all carburetor problems are found in the ignition system.

If it is still the original load-o-matic setup then check the vac advance line, spark control valve, and distributor diaphragm. The LOM setup has no mechanical advance. If any of these vac related parts are bad or on their way out they will cause what you mentioned.
