Brians1966
I am a new user and the father of Brians1966 and would like to thank all that have replied to his thread on hints and tips. Its nice to see how helpful and friendly everyone has been and both my son and me are extremely happy to be with FTE. I have been visiting FTE for some time but had not register until my son was given the 1966 F-100 from his Uncle, who has a 1965 F-100 CC,
We are one big happy Ford family.
To let you all know we started on our father-son adventure yesterday, I have not seen him smile so much. We have alot of work ahead of us be we have the time and our new found friends to help us out. Mechanical the 1966 is very stout, but is showing almost 40 years of use. But we'll bring it back and have fun doing it.
One more think Son if you read this- Poppy Red would be my pick, you know how we firefighters love Red.
It's probably none of my business, but I am a retired teacher & I taught college & adult Voc-Hab which meant a lot of folks around that age. Plus this worked great with my Sons when the time came. . . .
When I became a teen I acted the same way, as most people do. Key is get attention of target person/ group with something they either don't expect, never considered, catches em off guard, or stimulates their interest in s subject.
I would start my College classes 1st day by whacking a floor or blackboard with a 3"w x 6'-0"l x 3/16th thick, Aluminum straight edge, flat side down, hard. It was very loud. I'd hear whole class breathing as they waited to see what was next. . . I'd give them something interesting next, while I had their undivided attention.
When they realized I had something to give them they could use or gain from I had loyal & devoted classes that did very well. In fact some kept in touch until I left the institution when I retired.
Same with my sons. they were sure they knew me, everything about me, knew how to push my buttons, how to make me dance and so on. When they realized what Sanctioned Drag Racing was about, & their stupid boring old Dad was competitive & victorious too, it was beyond comprehension to them. An epiphany to 'em.
I suddenly was a different person right before their very eyes. What really did a number on my sons was realizing I had more than a "Clue". Other people were constantly asking my advice & suggestions, others copied what I was doing. I even got paid for stuff I knew or did. That impressed them.
When they began on their own, I let them do most things their way, unless safety or cost was prohibitive. They learned and did well, 2 carried on drag racing, one never developed the intrest it took so he quit.
My buddy, on the other hand tried to get/ make his son do it all his way only. Like the autocratic "my way or the hiway logic". He failed, just as some instructors where I taught. They failed also by demanding and not sharing, supporting & encouraging.
It's the difference between teaching & instructing. Teachers induce students to want to learn, instructors tell them what to do, how to do it. If you get student interest when you have their attention, teaching is little more than sharing what you have to offer with people who want to learn it. Operative word here is "SHARING or share".
We all learn what we want to learn much better than what we must learn, or are required/ forced to learn. That's all I'm sayin'.
I believe it is called willful induction of knowledge by a student.
Do what it takes to share with our kids! When it's gone it's gone for good, the memories will be an empty loss forever. FBp
