-I am the proud owner of a 1968 F-250 4x4 w/390 and 4 spd trans.
-Wanting to go 5 sp or 4 spd automatic but not sure what is best given the divorced t-case.
Thus far I only have:
GM NV4500 2wd with short shaft
Are there any other options available that are not over involved with custom work?
Also wondering about pwr steering. The closed ball steering is really tough on dirt roads.
Bendtsen's is about the only choice for an auto 4 speed, and also 5&6 speed manuals from SBF's and Modular motors. Ford FE Transmission Adapters
It will be spendy, and require some work to install. FE's are not exactly inexpensive motors for conversions. Probably might be easier to also convert to a married NP 205 TC to make things easier.
For power steering, you can get a 77-79 F-250 PS gear, or get a Benchworks kit.
Check into a TKO 600. It is a 5 speed manual transmission that will bolt directly to your 4 speed bell housing. Checkout modern drive line for a kit. It runs around $2500.00
I like it ;-) I regularly pull a 7000lb travel trailer over a 6000ft pass. NP-435's 4th gear can't handle it and down shifting to 3rd caused the RPM's to jump an uncomfortable amount to maintain speed. Now I shift to 3rd OD and pull the pass well.
Also, when on the highway I am in 4th OD for alittle better MPG.
Only downside is,... as advertised the OD is loud. It has a "whine" when in OD gear. This doesn't bother me though as the truck is loud anyway with the duels and big tires.
Lee thanks for the reply. I really like the idea of using the RTS but that "whine" concerns me and in my opinion the only negative. But like you said about your truck, my truck is pretty noisy all by itself, between the tires and exhaust. The positives are cost, reuse of your existing clutch, gear splitting and having the duel sticks are just plain cool.
If you don't mind me asking what is your MPG during Hwy driving? Also if you have any pictures online send me the link.
I do not know how much room you have between trany and transfer case but maybe a Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions. unit would work?
You can also split each gear, It does not have a "stick" but could use a split shift button on the main trany shift lever like used on trucks that have 2sp rear axles.

The Gear Vendors unit can also be attached behind the transfer case. The unit is actually quite long, looks like at least 1 ft, for my setup. My truck has a divorced transfer case, with questionable space between the transmission and transfer case and not enough space behind the transfer case. There are a couple of issues I found. 1 it is expensive and 2 it shifts like an automatic transmission, not instantly, forcing you to have to wait for the shift. I would think it would be a good option for an automatic, but not a manual transmission. But I would like a honest review of someone that has this installed with a manual transmission.
It might work, but the GV unit will require 12.25" + replaces the 4.75" tailshaft housing so that is 17" + the connector shaft to the TC. The TC would have to be shoved back, and a longer and a shorter driveshaft needed. GV does make 4x4 units, but only for married TC's.
I haven’t seen that the GV advertised will bolt up to a manual shift tranny....
Only a C6?
I wish I had known about the splitter 20 years ago. I’d still have my 3 on the tree.

Hi Tim,
I have not checked the Highway mileage,... or any mileage for that matter ;-) I only put ~3000miles a year on the truck.
Having 2 sticks is fun,... but three are even cooler!!! OD, 4-speed, Transfer case shiftier.
I don't have any pic's online. I did take some and even started a "Install paper" but never finished it. You basically have to move the 435 backwards 7 1/2 inchs. Hardest part of this is maintaining the drive line angle. Sounds complicated but it's really not. Then, you need to weld up the tranny cover and cut new holes for the OD, 4 speed and transfer snifters. The short drive shaft from 4-speed to transfer case is also shortened 7 1/2 inchs.
Outstanding info. I did go the AA but was confused as the product did not specify FE Ford for the ranger OD. I really like the Ranger OD and will probably go that route since I am going to take the truck apart anyways.
Thanks, sw
