SO.. What battery is everyone running in there 73-79 and why?
Looking for Cranking amps, cold start, optima red tops or what. Also and why, what are you pushing or feeding
76 F100 302 with nice stereo and mild ignition system and charging etc.: Looking to replace the battery with something better than the old interstate junker that died on me ....
73 4x4 - Two Optima AGMs.. yellow tops. Dual batteries. Roof, rock, driving, DRL, and fog lights; ICU cooling fan, winch. 3G powered.
71 F250- Autozone Duralast Gold
70 F100 - Autozone Duralast..3G powered, EFI, and Lincoln Mark VIII fan.
Deep cycle... Excellent ampacity for extended periods of load.
Had a red top before... not enough mojo and it went bad after only a couple of years.
Do you think it was the winch that did the red-top in? Curious - looking for some options on a later model diesel that I have for work, has a BIG inverter that gets used quite a bit. Been running a pair of Group 31's with decent success, but.... Was a little scared of a "deep cycle" for winter cold-starts.
On my dents - usually just use Group 31's (they will fit in the box, have to get custom on the hold-down), random brands. Used to like Interstates, don't think they're as good as they once were, had surprisingly good luck with John Deere Strongbox batteries.
Optima blue top for me. One I like the extra post for wiring. I’ve got the battery charging cable going to the extra positive post I did for the 3g alternator conversion. Also getting around to hooking up a plow. So another wire/cable for that etc...and with the extra posts on the marine deep cycle battery means less wires hooking up to the solenoid etc....my .02.
Duralast Gold in the F250. 1000 CCA @ 32*, 120 AH reserve capacity. Been in the truck for 13 or 14 years and still works, much to my amazement. I've added a little water a couple of times over the years, and in the past it would sit for a couple of months at below freezing temps and still start after cranking to pull gas up to carb. When it dies I'm going dual RV/Marine for more reserve while winching. I have an Optima Red Top in my '71 Bronco and haven't been impressed with it at all. I'll probably replace the Red Top with a Yellow Top or something similar (RV/Marine) when I finish the paint job.
Mark.
Funny you should ask, my truck just killed a new interstate 750cca, wasn't the batteries fault, truck sat for a few months and has a draw somewhere bleeding the battery and I was dumb enough to keep the cables hooked up .... Tried to bring the battery back to life and couldn't, took back to dealer and they replaced, free under warranty..... Battery does fine for starting truck, hope so for $150.00
Lots of good info I appreciate it.
I've killed a couple interstate batteries but they are cheap and expendable when it comes to killing. I haven't opted for the marine blue top optima. I'll have to look at that.
