ATARIBOX - New Atari Console
This Thursday, December 14, according to a curiously information-phobic announcement, you'll also be able to pre-order another nostalgia-fueled retro box for your increasingly crowded collection. This time around it's the Ataribox, based on 1977's Atari 2600 that was the definitive home console in the years before the landmark Nintendo Entertainment System.

“With Ataribox, we wanted to create an open system, a killer product where people can game, stream and browse with as much freedom as possible. Atari games and content will be available as well as games and content from other providers,” said Fred Chesnais, Atari’s chief executive officer.
This type of joystick should be perfect for playing many of the classic Atari games coming to the console, but it most certainly will not please younger gamers that have grown up with consoles featuring D-Pads, Analog sticks, triggers, and a myriad of other buttons. The original Atari 2600 also required rotating paddles for a number of its most popular games, so we suspect the joystick revealed by the Ataribox team will be but one type of Ataribox controller. We’d bet modernized paddles are coming, as well as a modern controller, more typical of today’s consoles.
We’re speculating on the last point, but we doubt developers of modern games would be happy with a single action/fire button. It may be fine for simple shooters, side-scrollers, and basic mobile game ports, but not for more elaborate modern games. Time will tell what else the Ataribox team has in store.

Launch Delay
The countdown to the Ataribox launch on Indiegogo has been officially paused. Because of one key element on our checklist, it is taking more time to create the platform and ecosystem the Atari community deserves. Building Ataribox is incredibly important to us and we will do whatever it takes to be sure it is worth the wait.
An updated launch plan is underway and more detailed information will be available soon.

They must be working on an equivalent of the "PSN store" is my guess.
I hope it comes bundled with like 100 or more of the classics.Start them off in retro mode where they look exactly like the 80's then like 10 seconds into centipede for example,current gen graphics rips out of the game and blasts you with the spectacular colors and stuff........All we got are dreams about the system at this point I guess.

Engadget Nearly a year after it was first revealed, retro gaming enthusiasts will finally be able to order the Atari VCS beginning May 30th via an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign.
Atari will be offering two versions of the gaming system: a "time-limited" Collector's Edition featuring the faux wood-front panelling and the $200 Onyx Edition, which is just black. Oddly, it doesn't appear that either of these options will include a controller as the announcement reads "other packages will include the Classic Joystick and Modern Controller."We're also finally getting a hint at the system's capabilities. Atari announced on Monday that it has partnered with AMD for the console's processor. The VCS will support 4K resolutions, HDR and 60fps gameplay. It will offer both internal and external storage, built-in WiFi, USB 3 and Bluetooth 5 capabilities.The company is still tight-lipped as to what you'll actually be able to do with the VCS, however. The system will come pre-loaded with Atari Vault, a 100-plus game collection of classic Atari games like Asteroids, Centipede and Missile Command. It will also reportedly be able to support "a full range of popular modern titles" though nobody knows what those will entail as of yet.After the IndieGoGo campaign has concluded, Atari expects to begin shipping the VCS in the Spring of 2019.

Some were skeptical about whether or not there would be an audience for the Atari VCS, but the gaming console has done phenomenally well via crowdfunding in its first day. Preorders went live for the all-in-one entertainment system yesterday, and it managed to raise over $2 million in its first 24 hours. The system is on sale for $199, while a Collector's Edition model can be purchased for $299. Both variants are expected to release in summer 2019.Described by the company as a "retro-inspired" console, the Atari VCS looks like the classic Atari 2600 console but with modern capabilities. Not only will it come packed with over 100 classic Atari games that can be played with a nostalgic one-button joystick, but the device will also house modern games. On top of that, Atari is planning on making the device an entertainment system first and foremost, and will support all types of streaming services as well as cross-chat with Discord, among other features.At the time of writing, the total amount raised for the Atari VCS currently sits at $2,207,928. That number is made all the more impressive when consumers consider that the initial goal for preorders was merely $100,000. In total, it's over a 2,000% increase over what the classic gaming company was hoping to crowdsource for their first real console since 1993's Atari Jaguar.
Atari has seen some tough times in the past two decades as they've struggled to adapt to the modern gaming scene, so it's great to see the company finding a successful niche for itself within the gaming space. It's unlikely that the Atari VCS will rival the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One with regards to player base and stream of triple-A content, but Atari really isn't trying to do that. Instead, the company is attempting to branch out a new position in the gaming space that caters to a premium nostalgia, while also setting the stage for a more open platform for modern consumers. As they've clearly found something that works, as the first numbers show.This is a strong first step for Atari, but it is in fact just a first step. Now that they've successfully funded the Atari VCS, it's on them to deliver a strong console come summer of next year. It's important that they make good on all of their promises, as this good will could help carry the company to another era of prosperity in the years to come. Everything is lined up in their favor, so now they just have to successfully execute.
