Auto high beam function SD 2017 LED headlights question

I have had the following issue happen on two separate occasions wondering if anyone else has experienced it.

F350 2017 Lariat Diesel fully loaded
We live in a rural area and the auto high beam function is wonderful BUT...

While following a dually Chevy with the center tailgate red light the high beams inadvertently turned on then off. The driver obviously thought I was flashing him got concerned and called the police. I got pulled over and the officer was stumped (showed them the feature exists) and assured them I would disable it.

Ford dealership found nothing wrong. 2 weeks later on highway following behind a travel trailer with center red light it happened again. I was far enough away and immediately disabled the function so no police call.

Have any any of you experienced this? Both times it happened while following a object with a above license plate center red rear light. The other 9,000 miles we have driven the truck with the feature on no problem but we have serious reservations about its “auto” programming.

Thank you
Janell

I have not experienced this yet but I will keep an out for it. To date I have never had them switch to high on anything but open road.

Another negative, although I don't use my auto high beams all the time. They still are not quite smart enough to want me to blind people for that brief second when I know for sure someone is about to crest a hill in front of me. That being said, when I have used them what you described has never happened to me. Then again, I'm not sure I've been in your exact scenario either.

I can’t believe how pathetic a person must be to call the police because someone flashes them from behind.

A little overzealous or extreme behavior by the driver in front of you and being pulled over by the police if you ask me.

Why the police were called in the first place is just crazy especially since the other driver could have just gone about his or her business because they were in front of you.

Weird.

The only time mine went a little whacky was when I was 4-5 seconds behind someone at night and they were towing a trailer, but the trailer had no lights working. So the whole time the hi-beams would turn on and off (whenever there was a vehicle in the opposite lane and on-coming) .. it was like the truck / trailer in front of me didn't exist.

That is a little extreme. In the past, I have flashed someone to let them know they have a flat tire or something has fallen out of the back of their truck, etc. A little paranoid I guess.

Exactly. Please tell me your lights flashed them multiple times over some period of time to get them to call the police. I would've just assumed you bumped the high beams on accident or something.

The auto high beams work pretty well, certainly better than the earliest versions Ford started using in Lincolns circa 2010.

My complaint with them is that they cannot "predict" a vehicle coming over a hill or around a corner, and must see the lights directly for at least a half second or so in order to dim. This will temporarily blind the other driver. A good driver sees lights starting to come over the top of a hill or around the corner and dims his lights prior to the other driving actually coming into view. Likewise, I appreciate it when someone else does this for me.

I hate the ping-pong affect of going over hills following someone, as well. The first car drops into a dip; the truck switches to high. Then you crest the hill, light up the car in front of you for a second, then it dims. Then he crests the next hill, back to high beams, etc, etc. Humans are smart enough to know the car remains in front of you, but the auto high beam system is not.

One other thing I noticed...I got behind a Subaru who was driving at night and only had his day running lights on. No rear taillights. So even though I was right behind him, my high beams were on for several miles. He must have thought I was the biggest jerk! I just didn't notice.

I cant imagine a place where the police have so little to do that they would respond to such a call.
