Last weekend he was driving down the road and saw a fellow ford truck broke down in the middle of the road holding a set of jumper cables. He pulled over and popped his and be for he could get out of the truck they already had his hood up and the cables on, but they put them on reverse. they got theres start and left before he could say anything. The problem he is having know is its very hard to start and in the mornings it take 15 minute for it to start, also his check engine light is on. If you cross the battery what would it blowup. Also it runs very crappy know?
Is there anyone that can help?
Probably blew up the regulator or diodes. I am pretty sure on a Ford that it is in or on the alternator. You may have also blown up anything electronic that was turned on at the time. You might have blown the computer(ouch), some sensors, gauges, the radio, and other miscellaneous electronic items. I would guess though, if you are lucky, all that blew was the regulator/diodes.
Get a meter and measure the battery when the engine is off, should be about 12.6v to maybe 14volts. Then measure it again when engine is on, should be something like 14v to 18v. If either or both of these values is low, then you have found the immediate problem. After repair of the regulator/diodes, then you need to check the other systems mentioned.
On a GM and Hitachi alternator the diodes and regulator are a piece of cake to replace. I think it will be the same, but I have never had a Ford alternator fail so I never replaced those items.
Good Luck, been there done that long ago, lots of smoke too.
