Well, it's finally on the road!! I started driving my truck to work this week. Tuesday night I replaced the fuel pump, since it took me two hours to get home Monday night, normally a 15 minute trip. But anyway, I noticed if I have to brake a little harder than normal (some fool decided to cut in front of me), my oil pressure drops to less than 10, but goes back up to 40-50. Is this a normal thing?
Have you checked the readings with a mechanical guage? The ones in the stock dash are usually tired and don't always read correctly. You can usually get a mechanical guage with a long hose or tube and put it where the stock sending unit threads in and put it in the cab and watch it.
That is very normal my truck has been doing that for the last 15 years. Their is no baffle in the oil pan, when you hit the brake the oil runs to the front of the engine away from the pickup screen. This is on rear sump pans. A good oil filter helps also. I often thought of putting a accumlator on to keep this from happening.
The suggestion to check it with a good mechanical guage is a good one. If it has at least 30psi by the time the engine gets to about 1500 - 2000 RPM with the oil hot, it is probably ok. It is fairly normal for oil pressure to drop below 15 -20 or less with hot oil and engine idling.
