Hi guys I have a 04 5.4 that has ran flawless for all of the 150k Miles. The only thing I have done is fluids and regular maintenance. Anyway. It has developed a engine tick on the passenger side. I can’t quite track it down and there is no engine codes. It only does it at idle and I can’t detect a rough idle, although I can hear a slight miss maybe in the exhaust. Is there a common thing I should look at first before I nedlessly replace parts? I was plannning on doing plugs at 150k, it’s at 147 now.
There's a known issue where the exhaust manifold bolts rust and snap off, usually starting with the 2 rearmost ones. I'd check those first, which would eliminate an internal engine issue.
My 5.4 had a tick when cold for a couple years that I thought was exhaust. After it blew out a spark plug and was repaired the tick was gone. It might be worth checking the plugs.

Hopefully the plugs have been changed at least once before.
If not the risk of blowing a plug is going up and I would check them soon.
If your plugs are OEM can you check the torque on them to see if any are loose?
All the passenger side plugs on our 6.8L Excur were a tad loose at 108k.
We bought the Excur with 104k and I had just collected the plugs/boots/tools to do the job when it blew the OEM #3.
I change plugs/boots at 50k and torque the plugs to 25 ft-lbs.
Our 2003 5.4L Exped also has a tick (or clack) on the passenger side which I think is the timing chain/tensioner.
The tick completely goes away at around 1 min or so and is fine until it sits overnite.
