When I had the rear of the truck jacked up and in neutral I noticed that when I turned the driveshaft one way there was a sort of ticking noise that sounded like it was coming from the transfer case. But when I turned it the other way there wasn't any noise. Is this normal?
I went out in the shop and just put the truck in neutral and rolled it forward and backwards just by pushing on the tire. it makes the noise only when rolling it forward, there is no noise at all when rolling it backwards. its nothing you would ever hear when the truck is running but you can easily hear it without the truck running.

Electronic. I have never really had it in four wheel drive other than to make sure it worked soon after I got the truck. But with winter coming I would like to make sure nothing is wrong with it. As far as driving it, everything seems fine.
Would someone be willing to check and see if theirs does this? I would really like to know something is wrong before taking it to the dealer. remember in order to hear it the truck has to be off.
Just rolled mine back to check the oil. Forward or back, no noise. Lots of other noises from the power being on to get it in neutral, but not that I could hear from the transfer case or anywhere underneath. Take it to the dealer and have them document the issue and ensure it's all ok.
Okay, thanks for checking. I'll get ahold of the dealer tomorrow and see what they say. This my first Ford and I have to say it would have been nice to get more than 6,000 miles on it before having problems.

I wouldn't chalk it up to being a problem yet. I suspect your truck is OK.
assuming your hubs are in the free position, i dont believe anything in the tcase would be turning so i dont see how there could be any noise unless the servo motor has malfunctioned and is engaged the tcase some how. see if the front driveline turns by hand
yeah, the front driveline is disengaged, I can turn the front driveshaft by hand.
I don't know, it's just strange that it only does it when the truck is rolled forward, when rolled backwards its silent. When I had the truck jacked up and was under there turning the driveshaft by hand, it sure sounded like it's from the transfer case but it may not be.
I have a 2011 F350 that has started to make a similar noise sounds like a chain or ratchet lick click when turned and only in forward. Love to know if you found an issue or just wear and tear.

I actually went to the dealer and checked a couple new trucks and they both did the same thing, so I just assumed it was normal and haven't worried about it since.
