tailgate step

Hope this hasn't been asked too many times as I searched but can I add a factory tailgate step to my tailgate or do I need the whole tailgate? I really don't want to take apart my new tailgate just to see! Thanks this is on a 17 250 SLT. Thanks In advance!

Im not sure but my father in law busted the top piece. I told the body shop guy to just buy the whole piece, he said that it would cost stupid money, better off fixing what we had. Seems like just the step pad and arms was $700 by itself. Id guess it would cost major $$$$ to do what you are wanting after the fact. Whole tailgate was like $3,000 if I remember correctly.

When I was looking the step was important to me and I kept finding trucks that I liked without it. I was told the only way to change it was with a new tailgate. Price was a lot to do that I don’t remember the number but it was prohibitive, at least for the new part. Maybe salvage?

Just buy an Amp Research Bed Step. It doesn't involve the tailgate and you can use it with the tailgate in the up position. A big benefit when towing. No drilling, 2 bolts, 20 minutes.

I went with the Amp bed step. Easy to install and very durable. Had Boy Scouts bouncing in and out of the bed of my truck last weekend and it worked like a champ.

This was my answer also. I had another brand on my 2016 that was priced considerably lower than AMP, but when I got my 2017 they hadn't updated it to fit the new trucks yet. So AMP it was.
