Cold Heat in Winter

I was looking under the driver's side of the van and I found 2 lines going to where the rear heater is. These are heat lines aren't they?

I noticed they were bare and last winter the van was cold. Should I use foam heat tubing on it? (keep the warmth in it)
We replaced the thermostat. Is there anything we should do to keep the van like toast at -20 to-30 in the winter?

Also I'd like to know.. Who makes Green oil filters??

Thanks for your help.

I am changing mine, it's an easy job. Only problem is that the cheap Mexican made core does not let the heater hoses and clamps go on, the pipes are too big.

There are other reasons why you may not have rear heat. Look at the underside again and you will see a round heater valve on one of the heater lines along with a vacuum line. This valve may not be operating or the vacuum line may disconnected or broken at some point.

As long as you are messing with the valve, you might try back flushing the rear core.

Check for proper operation of the air blend door. You should have floor air output on HEAT but overhead vent air on A/C or VENT settings. If not, check the vacuum operated motor found on the left rear backside of the plenum box.

Cold Heat in Winter

I know of people who live in locations where it is consistently very cold for long periods of time (North and South Dakota) who block off all or part of the radiator so that the engine can warm up all the way (they also don't turn the engine off when at work). I've even seen this done on big trucks and buses in some not-so-cold places like Denver. However, if your van used to get toasty during the winter at -20 to -30 and doesn't now, then you most likely have something wrong with the system, for which you've got ample suggestions on what to check.

The heat is not what it used to be. It will warm up but it is so sloooow!! It almost never gets to confort zone.

How do you change heater core? How much does it cost? (Canadian)

Thanks for your help!!

Cold Heat in Winter

I read somewhere under my hood on a label that it is very crucial to not have any air in your coolant system. How would I go about getting it out of the system. I also have an Aerostar that takes a while to heat up in the winter. I get heat from the front vents but the back I only have heat on the bottom, not the top. Are they both supposed to be working at the same time or no?
