Considering a 2001 f550
I'm looking to get a truck to tow heavy. I have a 39ft 5th wheel that loaded will be 17k loaded. Also a 26ft cargo trailer weighing over 10k. I'm on a little bit of a budget and would like to keep it under $15k. I've got a couple that I'm seriously considering. The first being an 01 f550 4x4 crew with the 7.3 auto. Decent truck, 130k on it or so but only 3k on a brand new engine (injectors turbo everyhing from ford) I know the owner and could buy it for my budgeted price.
-the other option is a dually extended 12 valve dodge 3500 with a 5spd. I'm familiar with both engines as far as performance modifications etc. I know the 550 is going to handle the weight better but mileage is a concern as whatever truck I get will see 15-20k miles a year, 75% towing. I know people tow this weight with srw but I want to be safer than sorry.
Any feedback or ideas? I can get a suitable dodge for 5 grand less. My real concern is what I've read about the 550 with 4.88s getting 6mpg towing. What could I expect mpg towing these weights if I get intake exhaust and gearhead tuning? Thank you
