Question got a leak

Hello all,

I just got my first Ford last week and could use some help. Its a '91 Ranger 4x4, Regular cab, longbed, with a 2.3L engine (replaced) and a 5 speed (od) manual transmission. Does anyone know what transmission is in the truck (Mitsubishi or Mazda)? What about the fuel tank, the owners manual gave two sizes, any way to tell with out running it dry.

Now for the big problem. Something is leaking. The drips are coming off the cross support at the rear of the tranny, and its light colored with a thicker than oil consistancy. Odor (especially after driving) is what you would smell around a bulldozer, kind of like a burnt hydraulic fluid smell. I have never had to service a manual before, and don't know what, if any, fluid goes in, or where it may come out. Could this leak also be from the transfer case?

I know these questions sound a bit novice, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Vince

got a leak

The Ranger Station has a section on tranny id. The Mazda is known for leaking at 3 plastic plugs at the rear of the shifter tower. They can be replaced.
