I guess I'll have to calibrate it. At least it came with instructions to do that. It also requires ignition voltage for operation, maybe there is some fancy electrical work in there i which it starts to read when the ignition is on??
BTW, this is quite a wiring job. I've been crimping for a couple of Hours :-) by no means, a bolt up ordeal.
yea, I know what you mean. I have over 15 into mine and still alot to do yet. nice motor by the way, I'm in the process of building a 429 for my 56 F-100 (this too will be a small fortune)
I read the specs of the 428, where are the pics? BTW, what did you end up spending on your motor too? Sorry to be nosey, it's just I've sunk a buch of dough into my project too and I like to compare.
No problem with the pics, just takes a while to load.
The new gauges hook up directly to 12V right? I would check your voltage regulator. Do your gauges pulse with the headlights on and the blower on high too? (trying to put a load on the alt.) Or maybe I'm way ahead, are they pulsing with the engine off?
Made anothe rground connection and gauges worked correctly, no pulsing. But, then there was smoke....hopefully I have not damaged any gauges.
back to the wiring table again.
regarding the pics, I thnk my web host is struggling lately. even when I go to edit the pages it crawls.
update: unhooked what I though was the ground wiring from factory harness, black going to waht I thought was a noise filter then out to 4 black/green wires. Obviously, these are not ground wires, despite color and 4 wire commonality to gauges.
anybody got a wiring diagram for the gasuges handy, so I can get this straight in my head.
Bt for now, it appeasr to be working, all gauges (except gas, have not changed sending unit since it is the aux tank), are working, all lights (I think, need some darkness to verify), turn signal indicator and the high beam indicator.
Al in all, this is a good bit more work than I expected. I'll try to post an installed pic at the above address.
Looks good, and I am glad they are making parts like this for our trucks. I don't think $400 is a bad price at all for something new; but if I were to design this I-panel, I would change the following:
One size larger spedo that maxed-out at only 100MPH and had 10MPH increments and a resetable trip meter. Glad to see that the odometer resets at a million miles--these trucks need that!
Larger tach to match spedo with a 5000 RPM max. I seldom rev past 4000, and a smaller MAX reading will make the smaller readings I do use more accurate and easier to see.
Don't take the phrase "wasted space" the wrong way, but there is enough room in the panel to add twice the number of 2-inch guages if they move them up just a little. I would add a fuel pressure guage under the tank guage, to tell if the pump is dying or filter is clogged. I would add a ammeter under the voltmeter, I find both equally important for analyzing the electrical system. I would also add a tranny temp guage, I do a lot of towing; and possibly a manufold vacuum guage to top it out.
Finally, I would use full-sweep guages on oil press and water temp; again because they are a littler more accurate and easier to read.
I love guages, switches, GPS's, do-dads that plug into the cig lighter. Anything that will take my attention away from the road.
