Stumped

Hello everyone,

My 1977 F100 custom is sick....she will idol pretty well but as soon as she is put in gear she dies. I tried to track down a vacuum leak using carb cleaner, no luck. I replaced the mech. fuel pump, no luck. Could this be a carburetor issue? I have a two barrel carb on it would you replace or rebuild? Should I continue hunting down a vacuum leak?

Thanks all

Russell, welcome to FTE.

If you don't mind throwing money at your truck and guessing, you should throw some money at some tools that will eliminate the guessing.

Vacuum gauge
Compression gauge
Timing light with advance feature
Multimeter

Buying a new fuel pump is a good thing, rebuilding a carb or buying new is a good thing, but only if it fixes the problem. With the above basic tools, you can more accurately decide where to invest your money.

You cant mount a new or rebuilt carb without a vacuum gauge, so you need one anyway. You can't tune your existing carb without one. And you can verify if you have a vacuum leak with one. There is no way around buying one.

If you can afford it, I can't, get the tools that come in some type of case. Looks cool, feels pro, and protects them.

Posting pictures is always a great help. There may be things unhooked, out of place, missing or added that someone here will pick up on.

Thanks for the advice and the welcome. I will be grabbing these tools as soon as I can. I have this truck to work on with my kids and eventually it will be their first vehicle. So investing in the tools is definitely the route I will go. Do you have any suggestions on ways to learn how to use them correctly, I YouTube alot so if you or anyone else has someone on there that seems to give good advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again!

What's the recent history of your truck? Was is running just fine for you previously and then started acting up, or did you buy it from someone in the condition it's currently in? And if you did buy it this way, did the previous owner tell you anything useful?

I'd say its vacuum related. If you could please post some pictures or take a video. It could also be that your carb is way to rich and a vacuum leak somewhere is letting air in for a decent mixture then when the idle goes down when your in gear kills the engine..

What engine? What trans?

If you have an auto trans check the fluid and the vacuum modulator for any fluid.

Welcome to the club. One of the first things you need to do is figure out which engine and transmission you have, and put it at the beginning of every post. I'm assuming its an automatic, because of the way you said put into gear, but technically that could apply to a manual tranny. I'd suspect vacuum modulator for an automatic transmission.

I'm more interested in discussing the carb though. Especially if this is somewhat of a family project, rebuild the carb yourself. Regardless of if that is a source of your current problem, it could probably use one unless you know it has been done recently. It's not a terribly complicated project and it could be a fun family project that gives you good results. Knowing your carb is rebuilt and then tuned will eliminate a lot of the guesswork when you run into other issues.

I suggest Mike's Carbureator, check him out on google. You probably have a Motorcraft 2150, same as mine and many others on here. Cost about $50 for a rebuild kit with awesome instructions, and I have more awesome directions if you need them.
