yesterday at approximately 4:30pm local time my truck engine lost power while crossing a freeway bridge with no pull off lanes. about 3 minutes later, a driver who wasn't paying as much attention as the others who had successfully maneuvered around me smashed into the back of my truck at nearly highway speed. i didn't get a chance to go look at the damage, but from what i could see in my mirror, it was severe.
i have 7 broken ribs and a broken collarbone. my husband has a smashed wrist, a mild concussion, and some severe abrasions, but we are alive and well-ish considering the severity of the accident.
So very sad to think you may have lost such a time capsule. But you and your husband are alive to look for a new gem! or maybe repair some "broken ribs" on the old one. Let's hope it's fixable.
A 4 year old boy lost his life recently up here in the Seattle area on account of a distracted driver who was looking at a dump truck. The driver who killed the boy will be fined $187. Family of 4-year-old killed in crash speaks out on distracted driving | KOMO
I used to be a truck driver. I was taught to always watch my mirrors, and I am still in the habit of constantly watching what's going on behind me. I saved myself once from a major accident when I was stopped on a 2-lane highway in my Subaru, waiting for someone in front of me to make a left turn. I saw this F Super Duty truck racing up behind me, and at the last second, I stomped on the gas and swerved on to the shoulder to get around the guy stopped in front of me, just as the guy behind me slammed on his brakes. A split second later, the guy making the left turn had a gap in traffic, and he stepped on the gas just in time to get out of the way of the guy who had slammed on his brakes. There was a tremendous screeching of brakes, but no crash. A few miles later, I was stopped at a red light. That guy pulled up beside me, but he just stared straight ahead and pretended I wasn't next to him, staring him down.
ktazklaw,
Allow me to echo what the others have already said, glad you both are still W/us. Life is so precious and I view life like the late red Sovine said in his Truck Driver's prayer song. "Be mindful every mile that life is just a little while".
sorry to hear about this unfortunate moment in time for you and your husband, I wouldn't wish it upon anyone much less a fellow FTE'r.
The truck is replaceable but a life isn't. may you and your better half ( or worse half ) have a speedy recovery.
he's definitely the better half LOL.. and thanks everyone for the well wishes.
now, before Geico rakes me over the coals and ignoring what i ACTUALLY paid for it, what should be a ballpark fair market value for my truck when they go to cut me a check?
