There are many threads about replacement shocks, improving ride etc. Are these replacement shocks mostly for off-road? Are they softer (improve ride) for increased compliance? Might that be exactly the wrong thing to do if you are pulling fifth wheels? Is there a better than factory replacement shock that is suitable for towing that would resist movement in the roll axis?
Research RS9000XL from Rancho. That’s the choice I made for exactly what you describe. Better daily driver ride but can firm it up for towing. Shocks don’t do a lot for roll axis.
Of the 10,700 on my truck, over 7000 are towing miles. I tow a 20k 5th wheel. The FOX 2.0's are far superior to stock both empty and while towing my RV. I've never been and never will be off road with my truck other than backing into a dirt campsite...

I put the Rancho RS9000XLs on my F450. They improved the ride both empty and towing heavy.
I went with the Rancho 9000XL shocks all the way around. They are a good compromise in my opinion. They cost less than the Fox shocks, they are adjustable and won't require a rebuild. In my opinion, a rebuildable shock isn't all that attractive to me because I don't have the skills, tools or time necessary to do the rebuild. Sure I could learn how to do it by watching YouTube videos but I just don't want to.
We just finished a 1600 mile trip with our fifth wheel. One thing I notice is the truck ride is pretty harsh on the hard bumps. I have an air ride hitch which isolates the motion of the fifth wheel from the truck which should reduce the affect on the ride of the truck. It might even be worse if I didn't have the air ride hitch but I'm wondering if the Rancho's would help soften the ride when towing. The current shocks are whatever came with FX4 package.
Any shock would be a serious improvement when towing over the fake Rancho shocks that come on the FX4 trucks. I bet when you get them out, you will find that the gas side is blown on one or more of them.
