I have a 4R70W transmission and I just changed the fluid in the pan and T/C, along with the filter. Just lately it seems that I have a shudder while accelerating from a dead stop. Doesn't happen all the time, but on occasion. I haven't been able to isolate it from being cold or warmed up. I checked the fluid level after changing it and while warm and it was ok. Haven't checked it as of late but there has been no leaks or anything, so I don't believe it's low. When I drive it again I will check it.
But none-the-less.....anyone have any idea what it could be? Seems I've heard of this "shudder" before. It didn't do it before I changed fluid.
Yes, it's the bearing that attaches to your frame just behind your front driveshaft where the rear shaft ties into it (slips over the front shaft). It does have some play in it, but it should not be excessive and the rubber should not be damaged. Sometimes you have to get a flashlight and look closely to see if the bearing has spun inside the rubber.
Ford has had this shudder problem in the 4R70W transmissions for a while. Since the converter clutch slips all of the time and is modulated instead of being off & on, the fluid breaks down. This is why Ford switched to Mercon V. If you didn't use the correct trans fluid, it will definitely cause this problem.
When I changed fluid I used Amsoil Transmission Fluid. Sounded like others have used it without a problem. Funny thing is, before I changed fluid I had a problem with it "slipping" so-to-speak while shifting....specially from 3rd to OD. That is now gone and this has come up. I haven't been driving it lately (not my daily driver) so I haven't checked levels or anything else yet. Hopefully this weekend. Thanks for your replys. I'll report back on what I find.
