So i bought a 1989 ford ranger for 300 bucks and discovered it was a blown head gasket got my dad to come over got the head off in a little over 3 hours if that and the head doesn't look that bad its a little rusty inside but i see the cracks, however the gasket was beyond its life span and that what bought the water in the oil. I'm also getting the head resurfaced and tested for 80$. its looks the reason it go so hot is because the thermostat was completely worn and rusted i'm replacing that as well its on 6$ at AA. I love this truck and cant wait to spruce it up. What you guys think?

id put a new timing belt on at least while youre down this far, maybe water pump too, clean the top of the block off really good. ive had (3) 2.3 engines, there not bad to work on and one of the few ohc engines that are non-interferance. (so if a belt breaks for the cam you dont lunch the valves and pistons)

just got news from the machine shop head was cracked in multiple parts wanted 395$ to rebuild but i told them no as i found a already rebuilt cleaned up one for 230$.
What should i do to the part while i wait for head? should i oil them up? (the part that the head came off) also can i clean everthing else with brake clean?
id clean up the top of the block with a scraper tool then spray it down with wd-40, i wouldnt use brake clean as it could go down between the piston and cylinder and remove the oil film between parts and possibly cause a problem.
