Hi all-
I've got a 93 Bronco, 302, Auto, 78k. I've got a nasty ping once it warms up. Ping occurs from 1500-2200 (or so) rpm, after shift, or if pulling up hill a bit and try to accelerate. I know the typical problem causing ping is timing advanced too far, I'm pretty sure thats not it, it was set about 10, and I backed it off to about 6. I had EGR problems causing a miss at lower rpms. EGR valve (and some control for it?) were replaced by a dealer recently.
I guess my questions is, what are other causes for pinging. Its had about everything, plugs, wires (routed carefully so's not to cross/lay on one another), cap, rotor, fuel pressure regulator, IAC, TPS (all dealing with my earlier mentioned miss). It also had the 'magical motor vac' (did I get took on this?.. I was willing to try whatever) treatment thats supposed to remove carbon which can also cause pinging. What else can cause the pinging?.. lean condition, rich condition?.. or does that even affect detonation, do I still have EGR problems? Any help/ideas is greatly appreciated.
I looks like you and I may be blessed with the same affliction. I'v got a thread going on a problem that sounds almost the same. What codes have you pulled? I got 34 and 41 (EVP sensor and AIR not functional). We might be able to compare notes. Good luck!
Roscoe...
After I had posted mine, I saw you had one going very similar. I haven't pulled the codes since I had the EGR replaced. Before that, it wasn't showing any, just pass (11, or 111?.. I can't remember now). I haven't got a CEL, so could it still be throwing codes?
I'll pull them again tonight or tomorrow, just to be sure. One thing I have noticed, is it seems to run a bit warmer than the other FI 302's I've had...atleast by the guage, for whatever thats worth.
I'll keep watching the two threads, let you know if I learn anything elsewhere too.
Off subject, I see (by your sig)you have shorty headers, the basani Y... I'm assuming the cats are bye-bye...any problems with that?
i would move your timing back to its stock location. when was the last time your motor had a tune up this might help as well. How many miles are on this motor? if your motor is getting warm that would be from a lean condition or your radiator needs a good flush, might also need a new thermostate.
Thanks Kemical. I was toying with the whole thermostat thing, thinking it might be running a bit warm, but with the standard heat guage in the dash, who knows..I don't believe the needle on those is really representative of any particular temperature? It had a tuneup less than 10k back.. but I dont know that I trust the fools that did it.... Typically what all can be done for a standard tuneup on an EFI motor?.. oh yeah, only 78k.
you o2 sensor might be reading the exhaust wrong causing a lean condition. your basic tune up is , plugs, wires, cap, rotor and setting the timing. what happens if you run different gas through it?
Thats about all I thought they could do for a tuneup.. its had all of that recently..
Would the O2 sensor throw a code?..Probably not, if it was just reading wrong, not actually failing?... I was thinking about replacing it anyhow, sure its never had one, and I *believe* they recommend replacement around 60k.
Different gas (brand or octane) make very little, if any, difference.
Wires are routed good, I did that a month or so back, hearing they were prone to arcing. I question the quality of the wires maybe... The were from Carquest, cost quite a bit, but I don't normally buy stuff there... Maybe I'll put an old set back on and see if there is any difference.
Wierdbeard, actually I put a decent cat back on after lopping the stock crap off, but I ran for a while with the second cat off and the pre-cat gutted, didnt notice any drivablilty problems (or increased drivablity problems, my knock had been goin on for a while now!). The shorties I got bolted right up to the stock exhaust so I could have kept that, but like most of us I'm never satisfied with stock! After the exhaust and the "poor man's FIPK" there's a substantial increase in power (when it's not knocking). Hoping to get it running right to finally feel the good all that work did!
