The House / Shop Building Thread

With FTE being a website with so many users, and such diverse backgrounds. Thought a thread for people who have questions and those who have the knowledge to answer those questions would be good.
So if you're building a house, shop, shed, deck etc ask here.

I will kick off the new thread.

Most houses have a peaked roof.
I have built using trusses in the past, and understand insulating them, and the importance of properly venting an attic.

But in a single slope roof, how are they insulated and vented?

Hopefully next summer I will be starting to break ground on a new house build.
Unless there is a good reason not to build a single slope roof, that is what I want it to be.
Very uncommon up here, are they a problem to own after a while due to any reason like no breathing space etc?

How is best to insulate them?

Is spray foam best or ?

I've only used fiberglass batt style insulation in an attic.

Thanks Tim.
Not sure why, but I have always liked houses and shops etc I see that are a single slope roof. In my area though they are extremely uncommon.
Not even one in my entire town.
So I am only hesitant because I wonder if there is some bad problem with them, so nobody builds them.
Great link Tim, I have not seen that one before

Not really practical around here due to the amount of white crap we get annually. Interesting concept/look though.

In some cases it may be better for snow areas. It will all slide off one side, so cleaning up should be easier...well potentially.

I guess that would depend on the pitch of the roof.

Reasonably steep in my case as i plan it, and metal which is slippery.
I am just a stupid pilot and mechanic, so not sure what the pitch is called sorry.
But it will drop 12 feet in a span of 50 feet. Sounds steep to me, but I am not a builder so unsure.

That would be about a 4-12 pitch Ian 4 inches of rise to 12 inches of span

If you live in snow country a 4 / 12 may not be a suitable pitch.

4/12 is pretty flat for a 50 foot span for sure..

Snowfall varies here.
We can get just 3 inches total some years....or maybe 18 inches in a bad year.
There will be a beam full width at not exactly center but close.
The lower half of the roof will have a span of 24 feet to the beam. The upper half will span 26 feet.

I have a 4/12 pitch on my metal roof and the snow stays on it until spring and there has been more than 4 feet of snow on it. It sounds like a freight train when the snow eventually slides off in the spring. I only have 24 foot trusses so the span is only 12 feet of that slope plus the 2 foot overhang at the eave. Just food for thought..

Costs more to build. You have to build the walls higher without gaining any additional living space. Also there's no attic so you have to put vents in all the rafters and put several layers of insulation. It's a lot more work then just laying a few bundles of the pink stuff in between the floorboards.
