Hi guys, I've been seriously thinking about buying a used superduty (1999-2002) F-250. I want it to have a short bed, and extended cab, with an automtic transmission. Of course it must be four wheel drive.
About a month ago I test drove the exact truck I wanted over at my local Ford dealer. This truck had the V10 engine. The truck only had 25,000 miles. I was completely dissapointed. That truck had less power than my Expedition and my Bronco. I want a truck with stump pulling power!!!! That V10 was just really sluggish, it made alot of noise but didn't go anywhere.
I decided that maybe the 7.3L diesel might have better power. But, before I go and waste my time, and again be dissappointed, I would like your opinion. Does the 7.3L diesel have the power I'm looking for? I really appreciate all your help!!!
By the way, that wasn't the only V10 I drove. I also test drove a brand new one with only 12 miles on the odometer!!!
In my signature is mentioned a 2002 F250. It is a credible performer, with guts, noise and a strong pulling ability. Sliknspeedy likes it a lot, though I prefer my totally modified 1996.
When I bought my truck I was impressed with how smooth the engine was. It apparently had lots of power but it just seemed like the tranny was about to give out. In fact I thought that I was going to have to do a trans overhaul within the first 3000 miles.
I bought a Micro tuner and upped the horsepower which is a bonus but what I really noticed was the changes for the transmission. It feels like a locomotive now, built to pull it's gut's out.
Chances are you were experiencing the same thing with the V-10. But do yourself a favor and buy the diesel.

From your original post, I'm wondering what you're expecting from the truck. When you realize that the Superduty weighs a lot more than your Bronco, you might not find the "stop light to stop light" acceleration of a lighter rig.
My truck is modified pretty extensively, and for a diesel, it's pretty quick, but I'm not crazy enough to drag race with a Lightning, since they're about 3000 lbs lighter. Now, put a 10000 lb trailer behind both of them, and I'm thinking the torque of my diesel will even the playing field rather nicely.
Modifying a diesel is something like breeding Clydesdales for racing.
Oh no, I'm not looking for something that is as fast as a mustang!! It's just that V10 was sluggish. It had no get up and go at all. Even my expedition can get out of it's own shadow, that V10 couldn't even come close to accomplishing that!!
I decided I will take a trip this weekend to the dealership, and test drive a diesel if I have time!!
The V10 probably had a problem )other than really horrible gas mileage). I never drove a V10 in a F350, but in the Excursions we rent for trips, the V10 runs smooth and seems to have plenty of power for passing. Would not have the V8 gas engine in either one though.
You can get great power from the PSD, and increase it even more with modifications. Superchips MT, Exhaust and intake and as everyone here advises >>>> GAUGES.
