I have an 87' 351w out of a van
it is a factory 4 barrel
i was wondering could i get a points type distributer for it
if i can what years would i look for car or truck?
i want to put it in a Ranger so the points type ignition sounds more simple for this swap
and i want to have it ready for when i start driving it to school in feb.
any 351W distributor will work but why reverse technology? just get one of the early duraspark ignition sytems from a late 70's vehicle, the consist of the distributor, coil, modual box to mout on the fender, the easy to wire up, just find a late 70's cown vic, pickup, van, linclon, and swipe the whole system. DW
i am also consitering that
but i have a few questions
like i understand that you take the entire ignition harness but what wires are the positive and negitive wires that go to the ignition switch in the cab
i know its easy to in stall just plug it all up but which of the bunch of wires will be power wires and where do i tie them into the ignition switch
also where would i plug a tach up to?
Let me see if i can locate somew info someone else may know this off top of there head, but its been a while sinse i did it, all you need is the harnes for the modual, coil, and dist. Ithink thers only three wires to hook up, I know you have two power wires, Primary, and secondary power, one powers it while it cranking, and the other powers it when it fires up and is running. DW
this should show you what you need !
as you can see the modual has two leeds coming off it, the one with the 2 wires is the two wires you have to hook up, 1 of the wires ties into your +wire to the coil, the other wire is tied into the ignition switch wire that engages the starter solenoid when your cranking the motor.
the one to coil has power while its running
the other only has power while its starting
but i cant remember which one is which , hope fully someone will know. the wires you need to tie into on your truck are easy to find with a test lite, if you connect the two wires backwards then it will start but when you release the key it will die, so if that happens reverse the wires. DW
