Corrosion Prevention Between Panels

I'm getting ready to paint and install my NOS fenders on my 1956 F500. I'm curious to know what you guys are using to make a little cushioning between body panels to prevent any rubbing through which in turn causes rust; the areas I'm thinking in particular i.e. where the fenders bolt to the cab or the inner fenders or where the fenders bolt to the gravel pan.

I'm using plain old fender welting. glued on the fenders and gravel pan first then bolted to the body. I would have had numerous small gaps without it and I think it looks just right. The piece they sell for the front fender to cowl was way too thick. Welting can also be had in colors. On the inner fenders to the outer I used hockey stick wrap Got the welting and the stick wrap at Amazon.

I haven't got that far, but I'll use Friction Tape between the inner and outer fenders to sort of match what was removed.

Haven’t heard “friction tape” in a while. The issue with most welting, is it can/will trap moisture and cause rust.

Interesting. I would never thought of hockey tape for that application, and I have lots of it on hand thanks to my son the hockey player.

I've used it for other stuff and it weathers good, it doesn't absorb moisture.
I've got rubber inner tubes that I was thinking about cutting to match the running boards to the fenders.

I bought rubber washers to go between the panels where the bolts line up but it's not a true seam. I like the idea of hockey tape. Clever. There's also rubber tape that I've found which might work too. Here is the link to Amazon's product page.

You mean corrosion like this?

For the '48-'52s there is a rubber gasket but as you can see it just rubs through the paint. I have been debating about not putting anything in there. Just leave it open, but I think that the splash from the wheel well would be significant . . . if I ever drive it in the rain.

In short I would be interested in a better solution too.

Ouch! Did you have the standard rubber gasket between the fender and cab?!

Yes, when I bought the truck the gaskets were in place.

The cowl area was pretty rough on my truck too--fenders rusted as well. There is a big gap between the panels, however, so some sort of filler is needed. I'm using the usual, original type, rubber gasket. If there is something better, I'd like to hear about it.
