2002 60/40 bench swap
While picking through my favorite local junkyard, I came across an almost perfect 60/40 bench out of 2002 f150. Only had two small rips in the passenger side that was easily stitched up. With the seats I now started searching for seat tracks out of an older truck that came with a split bench or buckets but no luck. Slim pickings near me for any trucks older than 97.
Got it home and pulled the old bench (free to anyone who wants to come pick it up, going to the dump other wise).
Mocked the new driver seat up and it sits way too high with the 2002 seat tracks, I measured them to sit about three inches higher than the old bench, my knees were past the steering wheel.
So out came the cutting wheel and welder.
Here's how the cut down track sits.
I had to cut out small pieces to fill in the gaps left from the shape difference on each end of the track. The outers on driver and passenger side fit in with minimal work, located the seat in the cab and drilled new holes. I used big washers on the back side and new grade 8 bolts.
I didn't get a picture of it but the passenger bench inner front support is just an angle bracket. I cut the angle out for the height and welded it straight, I should have left a bit of an angle down for the shape of my manual tunnel ( not sure if the auto's are a different shape ) , I had to hammer it down a bit. the back passenger bench inner support needed no adjusting or cutting. ( I was not careful enough when drilling this hole. I came uncomfortably close to drilling into my fuel tank. )
Driver's seat in place.
Passenger bench in.
Sorry for the lighting on the last pic, I will try to get a better picture tomorrow.
I reused my old seat belts. The female buckles attach directly to the seats in the newer trucks so I had those also but the do not accept the older male buckle. I reattached the old buckles in their original locations on the floor and they work well, plenty of slack.
Took it for a test drive and they're great. These seats are a bit firmer ( which I like) and locate you in the seat way better. But the biggest plus is the lumbar support and armrest/cup holder. The armrest does not interfere with rowing the gears which I was worried about.
Very happy with my truck, now if I can find a good 5 speed to swap in...
