Is there a low cost tool for diagnosing OBD faults? And if there isnt can you reset a fault any way without a special purpose tool?
Since this is my first run-in with problems I'm trying to find out if there is a way to diagnose them at home, I'm fed up of paying a $75 diagnosis fee.
OBD-1 (pre '96) or OBD-2 ('96 and later)?
For OBD-1 see www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
For OBD-2 you need a scanner or code reader. Some parts houses will read trouble codes for free in the hopes of selling you something.
If you are looking for OBD-2 equipment. check out e-bay.
Search using OBD2 as keyword. Should find several.
They have a small code reader that also resets codes after reading for around $60. Also a hook-up to a Palm Pilot style device with a scan program and basic code database (little high). If you have a spare laptop laying around, check this site out http://www.obddiagnostics.com/index.html
brit--on my 96 explorer all I do is disconnect the battery for a few minutes, and then reconnect and start--you will also have to reprogram your radio stations and clock after this but if there Is a problem still occuring in the rig your engine light will be back on in no time. Be sure if you get a diagnostics system that it has a book for the codes. Good Luck!!
