4x4; 2x4 gear problem

I am a new, first time Ford truck owner, I have a used 1996-F350; automatic 4x4. I have an immediate gear problem. After I sucessfully engaged the 4x4 gears, I have now NOT been able to change back to regular 2x4 mode. While trying to shift to drive the truck goes into neutral, while trying to shift to park the gears grind, while trying to shift any direction in 4x4 the gears grind. Only reverse works.

4x4; 2x4 gear problem

I assume you have a manual shift transfer case? Shift it back into 2x4 with the engine off and the transmission in neutral. This should solve you problems.
