Power loss! Help

have a 2001 e350 with 7.3l power stroke and were towing a car home when it lost power . It still ran but weren't able to make it up a hill and came to a stop beside the road. We smelled diesel before it happened and when we took the engine cover off there was a bunch of liquid on top of the engine (probably diesel) and smoke was billowing out. It's not coolant or refrigerant or oil. Is it common for a fuel line to break or something and cause these Simptoms? Please help

Check the Passenger side fuel return line between the vc and plenum about 3/4 back on the block, has a hold down clip that's known to rub thru the hard line
