Side Boards

Was looking at some old photos I have of Gertie taken in the early 80s, and in most all of them, she is sporting a set of side boards on the bed. Pretty plain, no curves, drops, or slats. Just raw pine bolted together and set in the stake pockets.

I also remember as a kid, side boards were ubiquitous in my area, and I assume pretty much everywhere else. If someone had a pickup, and it didn't have a camper, it most likely had side boards.

Now, you just don't see them.

I have decided to make a set for the F-2, and will probably get the material this weekend. They look good on these old trucks, the expense is minimal, unless you go with oak or some other high-grade wood, and are easy to fabricate.

I intend to use just plain pine, but fit it well, and possibly stain. Will at least varnish or urethane.

Any folks here on the forum ever consider side boards?

There were a couple of old threads where people posted their sideboards, but looking at them, most fell victim to the Photobucket debacle. Maybe it's time we start a new thread with properly embedded pics?

I've considered sideboards and spent a lot of time looking at pics. I think they can look really good on these old trucks.

Like Ross mentioned, we used to have a thread with some very good examples....but.....

Here are some pics I've been collecting in case I put sideboards on my 54 F100 to give me some ideas. These were saved on my tablet. I have more on my desk computer which I can post tomorrow.

Stake type side boards on a little larger, real truck They looked much better when they aged a bit and came closer to matching the cab.

And one more. These are my favorite (even if they are on a Chevy) if I were to put sideboards on my 54 F100.

Rough cut 1x6, raw, letting it weather. Used carriage bolts and square nuts to bolt together.

I had them on my truck for a while. At the time I liked the look of them. One thing I found I didn't like was that I could no longer access the bed from the side of the truck. Not a huge problem for most people, but my tail gate is like 4' off the ground and requires a ladder to get in, lol.

I've sinced removed them and prefer them without it. Originally I liked how it balanced the truck, but tastes change over time. And hey I can now get in the back of my truck from the side again.

Word of advise to anyone planning on them; if the stakes don't go in super easy they aren't coming out. Don't hammer anything down.

Great responses guys, except that but for raytasch's photo of his stake sides, my browser doesn't render an of the other pics.

Have noticed this problem recently, and it appears it is something FTE has done. I can't even view my posted photos in my album. Ones that I have posted recently render fine.

Looked at all my settings, etc. Most photos will come up as broken.

Using Opera Pete, but have never had issues with it in the past. Went to school a number years ago for computer science, but never worked the discipline. Am quite familiar with digital systems, and web programming, but this one has me rather flummoxed.

Pretty rusty in web programming, so it may be something simple. The odd thing is the selective rendering of graphics. Haven't noticed it at all in other websites.
