Engine Block Rust

Today I took my truck in for it's first service but before hand I went around the truck looking everything over and I noticed that the engine block is covered in surface rust.

Is this normal? I did not have this on my 2015 6.7 or on my 2005 6.0. I put it on the list of items for the dealer to look at.

I have attached the one pic that I took before I took it in, I am sorry for the crappy shot. I can take more when I get the truck back tomorrow.

All surface rust. No biggy unless you plan on entering a car show.

Why would they not coat or paint the block to prevent it.

It's too thick to rust through. Plus, it would require high temp paint.

I think in the olden days you could tell who made the motor by the color of the block?

Diesel motors generate much more heat then gas. There already fighting keeping them cool. Yes a painted block would look nicer. But it's a 6.7 I don't need to get under the hood much

LMAO, pick your battles. If I'm going to pick a fight with Ford, it isn't going to be because the block shows some friggin' surface rust. You might want to chill out a little jeez.

There is a ridiculous amount much stuff around that engine 99% of the owners would never notice Probably don"t care either since they know surface rust is harmless.

I worked in a Nuclear power plant for 15 years. ALL of their emergency Diesel engines were painted. Some of them were as big a a ranch house..... but still painted.

Been a long time since I played in this arena as I switched engineering fields in the late 70's.

That said and its only a guess: They don't paint the CGI block in order to increase thermal conductivity. It would take a very high heat stable paint in order to paint the block as diesels produce a LOT of heat especially in the cyl wall area.

In addition the graphite comes is more than specification, for understanding purposes, Flake and Crab and then there is dispersion. The rust should be uniform in color and surface coverage. Granted todays CGI manuf techniques are a long ways from the 1940's and the quality and machinability is there. This maybe more of a hold over from earlier times. The CGI is found in both Ductile and Grey Iron blocks and has different specifications.

Hope this provides some insight.
