1.5" for the bottom plate plus 3" for the top two plates plus 92 5/8" for the stud = 97 1/8" or 8' 1 1/8". 8 feet of the wall is covered by sheet rock, leaving 1 1/8". This is taken up by the ceiling sheet rock and flooring. It gets a fuzy about here as that won't make up the whole 1 1/8". I did read that any gap left over would be put at the bottom and covered with the baseboard. Perhaps a real carpenter can explain it more fully.
Not to mention, a 2x4 can be literally a 2x4 - when it's rough cut. Then they do the finish cut - and what do ya know - its a lot smaller. I should know, our garage is built in the '20's with this REAL lumber...Makes the new stuff look like toothpicks...
Unless you go to a mill...Sometimes the big home-improvement places around here will carry them, but you can't build anything with them because they are not to code - they are too big
