Van seemed to be cranking over slower these past few months... i figured it was the battery so I changed it today when it would not crank over. It gets a bit of clicking from the solenoid so i attempted to jump the connection there but still no cranking ... is there a straightforward way to diagnose/solve the problem: starter, solenoid, ? It was working fine for years right up until this morning.
Try taking a wrench or hammer and gently tapping on the starter solenoid a few times and then try cranking. Sometimes the contacts inside the solenoid get a little burnt and need to have the junk beat off of them. Hope it helps.

thanks for the response... i tried some light and heavy(probably overkill) tapping before and during ignition activation. I have been searching the web for more info and I ran across this link which I found informative: www.autoshop101.com .... I would appreciate any pointers people have to other knowledge out there.
It would be great to fix it quick but it seems I will have to tow it home first and then spend hours before I stumble into solving the problem... the solenoid is fairly cheap so I may just replace that as part of the diag. process. Another idea I have is to first get a direct connection from the battery to the starter so I do not end up removing a good starter for no reason.
Check all connections. Sometimes battery ends, (Or replacement/universal battery ends), can cause similar problems. All it takes is a loose or corroaded connection to cause the same situation. Good luck.
Yes, I agree it sounds like a cable problem. Sometimes the cable will corrode between the strands just next to the clamp. It may even be hidden by the cable insulation.
Make sure both ends of both cables have good clean tight connections.
TO diagnose, I ended up connecting heavy jumpers from battery to starter in place of existing. Then connected another wire directly to the solenoid attached to the starter. When I tapped this wire against the main battery to give it juice all I got was a click at most. Starter/solenoid is one part so I replaced and the problem was solved... that was a couple of weeks back ... but i just wanted to thank those out there for the comments.
