Zinc has a bunch of benefits besides just improving scuffing on cam lobes. I run a small amount of additive in my 6.0 diesel since it does a better job of protecting any metal on metal surfaces and since some have experienced roller lifter failures in these diesels, hopefully my chances will be lower as a result. I also run it in my Mastercraft ski boat for similar reasons.
Lower zinc levels were mandated to prevent damaging catalysts on vehicles not because the non-zinc substitute additives work better; most oil Mfgs would rather use more than they currently can to improve their oils performance
It's not just adding zinc, but how it's formulated.
I was running Lucas Classic, but in the scientific testing, it didn't fare so well. That's when I switched to the Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil. In the tests posted on this site, it ranks near the top.
Most surprising to me was the tests showing that Edelbrock zinc additive ruined more cams than anything else!
Valvoline VR-1 Racing Motor Oil is a family of race-proven lubricants formulated to provide high load carrying characteristics, minimum foaming and maximum resistance to thermal degradation. Exclusive chemistry reduces internal friction and enhances power output under extreme service conditions. Valvoline VR-1 Racing Motor Oil is recommended for engines burning gasoline and full or partial alcohol fuels in track and street service. Valvoline VR-1 Racing Motor Oil is for use in any car, light truck, van, or SUV where API “SN” is recommended (see proper viscosity grade below). Not recommended for extended use in vehicles with catalytic converters.
