I just got an 87 Ranger with 130,000 miles on it. It runs pretty good but the other day I decided to check the radiator. What I saw instead of clear water was light brown water. I assume it was dirt or rust in the water but don't know for sure. I then flushed the whole thing and filled backup with just water.
I know I need to put some anti-freeze in it but am wondering how much I should put in. A full gallon? Half a gallon? How much water? It is a four cylinder MANUAL TRANS with no AC or PS. Just a simple truck.
You are correct about the 50% water/50% anti-freeze. I would just mix 1 gallon distilled water to 1 gallon anti-freeze in a CLEAN bucket or jug, you will need about 3-4 gallons of mix. DO NOT use anything that will be used for drinking and don't leave any on the ground, just a little will kill someones pet.
You could either drain your water and see how much it holds or you could mix it before hand in a separate container. It should hold a gallon of each. Whenthe system is empty, I usually put a gallon of coolant then fill the rest with water. Not an exact science but, close enough. You could also locate the owners manual and find out what cooling system capacity is.
